HISTORY OF CHISHOLM TRAIL ACADEMY

 

 

Chisholm Trail Academy came into existence when Southwestern Junior College was granted full college status and closed its academy operation in 1967.  CTA's first graduating class was in 1968.

 

 

LOCATION

 

Chisholm Trail Academy is a Seventh-day Adventist co-educational high school located at Fourth and Old Betsy in Keene, TX.  Keene is located midway between Alvarado and Cleburne, 25 miles south of Forth Worth. CTA is situated on 27 spacious acres.  The facility includes two ball fields, a gymnasium with stage, 15 classrooms, library, industrial vocational building and an administrative complex. 

 

CONSTITUENCY

 

Chisholm Trail Academy (grades 9-12) provides for the education of the young people in the Seventh-day Adventist Churches located in the Keene area.  Along with Keene Adventist Elementary School (K-8) and Southwestern Adventist University (13-16), CTA provides a complete Christian church school program.  The Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church is the constituent church of CTA.

 

OBJECTIVES

 

The Chisholm Trail Academy educational program is not happenstance. It has been carefully designed to promote the following objectives:

 

Religious Objectives — To help students understand and adopt a scripturally based philosophy and standards as evidenced by:

 

Preparing the student to unselfishly serve God and mankind.

Encouraging the student to internalize a system of personal ethics and values consistent with Seventh-day Adventist beliefs.

Helping the student learn to accept responsibility for his actions and decisions.

Engendering in the student a desire to be pure rather than evil, peace loving rather than contentious, considerate rather than thoughtless and demanding, open to reason rather than obstinate, straightforward rather than devious or hypocritical, merciful rather than severe and heartless.

Helping the student to cooperate with fellow students in promoting the spiritual and social life at CTA.

Developing a habit of daily devotions.

Understanding Bible truths.

 

Intellectual Objectives — To provide for the student a comprehensive curriculum to satisfy individual needs and interests and to develop an intellectual excellence that portrays:

 

An understanding of God as the Creator and Sustainer of mankind.

The ability to think independently.

The basic skills necessary for coping with the experiences of everyday life.

The various techniques for correct oral and written communication.

An exposure to culture and beauty as expressed through literature, art, music, and nature.

A mastery of appropriate knowledge and the use of the tools of learning.

 

Vocational Objectives — To help students appreciate the dignity of labor and be able to demonstrate a sense of economic value by:

 

 Providing the student with information regarding a wide range of careers.

 Impressing the student with the importance of meeting appointments promptly.

 Educating the student to see that opportunities come to those who assume responsibility.

 Helping the student experience the satisfaction of work well done.

 

Social Objectives — To help students develop Christ-like personalities and values so they will:

 

Be able to understand marital and parental roles along with the importance of the family unit in Christian life.

Be able to choose profitable activities for the use of leisure time.

Regard others as worthy of respect.

Manifest Christian attitudes of propriety and respect in all social relationships.

Respect the property and opinions of others.

Exercise self-control and self-discipline.

Conduct all their social functions in accordance with Biblical principles.

 

Civic Objectives — To accept civic responsibilities so students will:

 

Be involved in the investigation of current issues.

Respect authority.

Sustain the basic principles of separation of church and state.

Recognize that American democracy depends upon the integrity of the individual citizen.

Exercise the right to vote.

Demonstrate the Christian principles of brotherly love through community outreach service or mission activities.

 

Health Objectives — To help students recognize that in order to maintain good health, which is a balanced relationship between the body and the mind, they must:

 

Develop life-long activities for health and physical development.

Exercise temperance and moderation in all aspects of life.

Enjoy wholesome outdoor recreation and physical activity.

Obtain regular and adequate rest.

Practice principles of good nutrition.

 

GUIDANCE

 

Guidance services offered at Chisholm Trail Academy include:

 

Educational Guidance

Students not doing well academically are contacted and an effort is made to help them in any way possible.

Each student chooses or is assigned a faculty advisor who takes a special interest and endeavors to give educational guidance.

The registrar’s office provides counsel regarding academic progress toward graduation requirements.

The ITBS test is administered to all students in the fall to chart academic progress and help spot problem areas.

The SAT test is given to all seniors and others who choose to take it and the PSAT is given to all other students.

 

Career Guidance

The advisors, teachers and librarian cooperate to provide useful and appropriate resource material for career education.

The academy holds a career day every year where students are exposed to numerous individuals representing a variety of careers to aid them in career awareness.

One section of a class is devoted to career exploration.

Career interest and other aptitude and personality tests are administered to seniors.

Information about schools of trade, colleges, etc. is available to students.

 

Spiritual Guidance

CTA has Bible classes scheduled for all students in order to direct the day in a spiritual way.

Each class has a daily devotional time together to share their faith, hope and love for God.

CTA sponsors weeks of prayer throughout the academic calendar year.

CTA has a youth pastor available for both students and parents.

The Student Association sponsors vesper programs on Friday night occasionally during the school year.
